This website displays the “top headline” from various sources and gets updated at a regular interval. The criteria for determining what is “top” varies from source to source, but usually it’s the most visually prominent headline (or item). While the bulk of the sources are news outlets, top items on websites like Hacker News are also tracked.
Technology
There’s nothing fancy about this website. It’s a list of links you can click. It’s built using Hugo, deployed with Netlify and the data is gathered by a Node script sitting on a server.
About every 5 minutes the sources are checked for new headlines. When new headlines are found they are saved to the database. About every 90 minutes the site is updated with the new headlines. If you look at the “Last update” time and notice more than 90 minutes have elapsed since the last update, it’s likely because you have not refreshed the page, there were no new headlines since the last update or I changed the interval and have yet to update this page. There’s also the possibility that something else went wrong.
Mood Rating
All headlines are run through text analysis in attempt to determine whether the headline is negative, positive or neutral. As headlines come in, “Today’s mood” gets updated with a score that reflects the “aggregate sentiment” of the headlines for the day. This is experimental and like the rest of the website, a work in progress.
Mood rating has been disabled.
Privacy Policy
Users are not tracked while interacting with this website. All users interactions are private and no data is collected about visitors. In fact, there’s not a single line of Javascript in the entirety of this website. Therefore it would be impossible to track what interactions are taking place and difficult to collect user data.
Server side analytics could be used to gain insight into “visitorship” metrics, such as visitor count, page views and visitor location, however that is not currently enabled.
